Before performing the Pind Daan it is mandatory to take a dip in the holy river Ganges or any divine kund which may be locally present. For performing Pind Daan the devotee is supposed to dress up in white clothes and also keep a ‘Anga Vastra’ on his shoulders.

The Hindus believe that the holy river Ganga purifies the departed soul so that it can ultimately attain salvation. Pind Daan helps in the process of achieving mukti or final emancipation from the Hindu cycle of deaths and rebirths. It assists in liberating the departed loved one’s atma or spirit from this cycle.

The Pind Daan is typically performed by male children (sons), or other male relatives such as brothers, father, grandsons etc.

One should offer food to Brahmins on every “Amavasya”. By donating food items on every “Amavasya” and “Poornima” in some temple or other religious places. These were the remedies by which a person suffering from “Pitra Dosh” can get rid of this Dosh.

Legend has it that a demon named Gayasur – after whom the town of Gaya is named – received a boon from Vishnu that the ancestors of a person who performs pind daan here, will attain lasting peace. In the eras that followed, Rama is believed to have performed pind daan for his father emperor Dasharath in Gaya.
